Media & Press

State of Ads is the industry connect programme of Blowtrumpet Technologies. We work with journalists often, and on a different basis from a corporate press office: the programme’s purpose is to put evidence into the open, so our default is to help.

What we can offer

  • Research findings, published in full, including the ones that do not suit Blowtrumpet’s commercial position.
  • Introductions to researchers working with the programme, where they agree. They speak for themselves, keep their own conclusions, and are not briefed by us before talking to you.
  • Context on the industry — how programmatic advertising, creator earning, attention measurement and privacy practice actually work, on background if that is more useful.
  • Access to events, with one condition set out below.

The disclosure we make every time

This programme is funded and staffed by a company with a commercial position in the market it studies. We state that on every output and we are stating it here. Weigh it accordingly, and ask us about it — it is a fair question and we would rather you asked than assumed.

What we commit to in return: research is published whatever it says, collaborators keep their authorship and their independence, and we do not approve findings.

Events, and the Chatham House Rule

Many roundtables run under the Chatham House Rule: you may use what you learn, but not identify who said it or the organisation they are from. We will tell you before you walk in which sessions are on that basis and which are open, and you are welcome to decline a closed session and attend an open one instead.

We will not invite you into a room under one understanding and then claim a different one afterwards.

Attribution and quoting

Published research may be quoted and cited with attribution. Please link the original and quote findings with their caveats intact — stripping the limitation from a result is the most common way this kind of work gets misreported.

If you are reporting a finding, we are happy to check your characterisation of it before you publish. That is a fact check, not copy approval, and we will not ask to see your article.

What we will not do

Pay for coverage. Offer access in exchange for favourable treatment. Comment on Blowtrumpet’s commercial business — that is the company press office. Or share anything about an individual member of the community, including whether they attended something.

Corrections

Tell us and we will correct it publicly, with a note recording what changed and when. We apply that to our own research as readily as we ask it of others.
