Commitment first. Capital later.
State of Ads is the industry connect programme of Blowtrumpet Technologies — research, events and open collaboration, funded by a bootstrapped company and kept outside its commercial business.
This page is here because the people who read this site are often the people best placed to judge whether what we are building deserves backing. It is not a pitch deck, and this programme does not raise money.
The case, as this community would want it made
Privacy-first is not a constraint we are tolerating. It is the thesis.
Our systems process no viewer personal data — not minimised, not anonymised, not collected. Creative is composited locally before broadcast, so there is no ad call: no tag, pixel, cookie, device identifier or viewer-side request anywhere in the path. Targeting is contextual by counterparty — whose audience, never which individuals.
The industry’s reformed position is to collect the same data more carefully. Ours is not to collect it. That is structural, not a setting, and it removes an entire category of regulatory exposure at a moment when that category is only getting larger.
Mental health is a measurable property, and we intend to measure it. Attention is the one resource this industry consumes without a meter. Research into cognitive load, voluntary engagement and what interactive formats actually do to people runs through this programme — and it is published whatever it says, including when it is inconvenient for us.
Social responsibility is the supply strategy. Creators paid fairly, early and transparently is not philanthropy; it is how you attract and keep inventory. Formats people choose to enter is not a moral posture; it is how you hold attention without exhausting it.
Working at the intersection
Profit, sustainability, social responsibility and innovation are usually presented as a set of trade-offs. We think that framing is mostly an artefact of how the industry was built.
An advertising business that does not surveil anybody has lower compliance cost and lower attack surface. A platform that pays creators properly has better supply. Formats that respect attention hold it longer. We are betting — with the founder’s own money, first — that the well-behaved version of this business is also the more durable one.
If that bet is right, it stops being an argument and becomes a benchmark. That is the point of making it in public, here, rather than only in a data room.
Reaching out to the industry, because the thesis needs acceptance
A privacy-first model only wins if the industry can be persuaded that it works. That is a research, standards and advocacy problem as much as a product one, and it is why a company at our stage funds a programme that sells nothing.
We are not asking the industry to take our word for it. We are publishing the evidence, running the roundtables, and inviting people to try to knock it down.
Commitment first, capital later
If you are an investor who reads this site, the most useful thing you can do is engage with the substance — challenge the research, sit in a roundtable, introduce us to someone who should be arguing with us, or tell us where the thesis is weak.
Conversations that begin there are the ones we take most seriously. Capital, where it follows, follows from conviction that was earned rather than pitched.
